Gene Ontology

Gene ontology is an effort to help bring about similar terminology for all gene products in the hopes of making it easier for research to find information for there gene product.  To accomplish this the gene ontology website uses 3 large main categories biological process, cellular component, and molecular function.  These categories are further divided into specific go terms that allow researchers to find there gene product in other organisms. This all allows for easier finding of information of gene in different species.

Go Term search

So for my go term search of SIRT6 I was able to find 3 gene ontology process which where biological process, cellular component and molecular function.  Another key thing to note is that all the evidence for these process was by IDA or inferred from direct assay, which could be either through enzyme assays, in vitro reconstitution, immunofluorescence, cell fractionation, physical interaction/binding assay.  So this type of evidence gives the actual process that SIRT6 is involved in much more merieat.

Above is the flow chart for the molecular function of NAD(P) protein arginine ADP-ribosyltransferase so this shows how SIRT6 NAD(P) protein arginine ADP-ribosyltransferase activity is associated with its transfering ADP-ribos and that is its catalytic activity.

Above is the cellular component of SIRT6, here you  see that SIRT6 localizes into the cells nucleus.

Above is the biological process of protein ADP-ribosylation, this chart shows how this process can be say protein modification that could effect other biological process.

Overall analysis
One thing that did not come up was SIRT6 NAD-dependent histone deacetylase activity which has be recently found and would problem lead to SIRT6 having more GO terms because of this function.  While some of the GO terms where helpful like nucleus the overall results showed that the GO terms for SIRT6 are out dated.  For one there was no GO term for SIRT6 deacetylation activity and the only function that came up was that SIRT6 has ADP-ribosylation activity which it actually doesnt have.  So in the end the GO terms for SIRT6 need to be updated for people to get better search results for SIRT6 functions, locations, and it cellular components.
